Niyamgiri, Odisha (Orissa)

This is an artificial lake, formed by a small dam in the river. In this way there is water the whole year, also in the dry months. The water of the lake percolates in the soil and brings up the humidity, and the water level in the wells nearby.

There are a lot of small rivers and streams, because there is still good forest here. The forest soil absorbs the monsoon rain water and gives it to the streams throughout the year.

 A hill of black granite.

A pond (small artificial lake) to 'harvest' the monsoon water.

 Paddy (rice) fields.

 Big river.
